Freight factoring FAQs

Frequently asked questions.

Everything carriers ask before they sign up, answered in plain words. If yours is not here, call the office and ask a person.

How do I start factoring?

Fill out the application. Applications are usually processed within 24 to 48 hours, and you can start factoring as soon as yours is approved. If you would rather talk it through first, call the office and ask for a team member.

What is your factoring rate?

Our standard factoring rate is 3% of the invoice, and that is the whole cost: no ACH fee, no invoicing charge, and no monthly minimum or service fee on top of it. If you think your account warrants a lower rate, you can ask us to review it. We look at each account individually, and any lower rate comes out of that review, not from the request alone.

Do you only factor bulk freight?

No. Bulk is where Smart Freight Funding made its name, and it is still the credit we know best, but we factor every trailer type and any load: flatbed, reefer, dry van, livestock, tanker and hotshot as well as hopper bottom, end dump, pneumatic and walking floor. The terms are the same for all of them.

How long does it take to get paid?

Loads submitted by 11 AM CST, Monday through Friday, are paid the same day. Loads submitted after 11 AM are paid the next business day.

Do I have to factor all of my customers?

No. You choose which customers you factor and which you invoice yourself, customer by customer. The first time you factor a load for a customer, we send that customer a notice of assignment (NOA) so they pay us, and from then on you factor all of that customer's loads with us. If you later want to bill that customer yourself again, ask us for an NOA release for them.

What makes you better than any other factoring company?

Most factoring companies claim low rates, next-day pay, and no monthly minimums, then lock you into a contract and add fees that make the low rate not so low. We do not lock you into anything, and there are no hidden fees. It is your money we are handling.

Can my company use factoring?

Yes. We work with carriers of every size, from a single owner operator to a fleet of fifty. We are a company of about twenty people and we operate like we have thousands.

I am not very tech savvy. How will I send documents?

Through the Smart Freight Portal. Upload the paperwork for the load and send it, and you get paid the same day when it's in by 11 AM CST. There are training videos, and live support is available every day of the week.

Is your factoring recourse or non-recourse?

Recourse. That is what lets us offer no contract, no monthly minimum and the choice of which customers you factor: non-recourse factors take on the credit risk, so they commonly need contracts, minimums or all of your customers to make it predictable. We keep the risk low a different way, by credit checking every customer before you can factor their loads.

Is Smart Freight Funding part of BulkLoads?

Yes. Smart Freight Funding is a BulkLoads company. It keeps its own name, its own team and its own phone number, and works alongside the rest of the BulkLoads family: the load boards, the TMS and the insurance agency.

Do I need to send in my original documents?

No. We do not require original documents. Upload copies to the Smart Freight Portal; that is the whole submission.

How do I use you if I am locked into a contract with another company?

It may not be too late. In some cases we offer contract buyouts to get you out of an existing agreement. Call us and we will look at what you are in.

Have another question?

Ask a person, not a form.

A real person answers the phone every time. No menus, no callback queue, nobody reading from a script.
